State Music Industry Priorities in WA are articulated by WAM
Local priorities in Pilbara include:
(yet to be populated).
Local priorities in the District of Port Hedland (in development) include:
- Strong support for a local leadership mechanism sitting outside of local government, led by PHLMA
- The importance and survival of WA regional festivals
- Building First Nations leadership
- Building community by creating industry hubs
- Music education in schools, TAFE and other teaching facilities
- Partnership for Transport and Accommodation providers for discounts to enable equitable engagement across regions
- Networking for artists and industry professionals in the regions
- Careers, skills and training
- Access to mentoring and professional development
- Touring for both regional artists, Perth artists and international artists
- Mental health and music/songwriting
- Working with LGA's in regional WA
- WAM in the regions
- Funding across WA.
Some notable barriers include:
- Complex regulatory requirements for local producers, event managers and musicians in developing their business locally
- Nearby / regional towns such as Karratha and Broome which are perceived to be much more active musically and easier to work with local council
- Major issues with transience, cost of housing, costs of business, costs of living – all influenced by mining in the region
How have these priorities been developed?
- Regional Round Table, June 2024, led by WAM, was instrumental in bringing together local stakeholders with community and business leaders, and has seeded regional conversations
- Recent West End Street Party, linked with professional development opportunities and a venue liaison role, all funded by Town Of Port Hedland through the Live Music Office, provides an excellent map for potential future development activities in the region
- Development of Live and Local Music Industry Development program in a partnership between Town of Port Hedland and the federal Live Music Office, supported by research by Griffith University.
